Ozobot 2.0 Bit – The Programmable Robot

There is a wave of robotic toys on the market these days.  We have already highlighted a number of them already.  And this is a very good development for kids.  These educational bots both entertain kids and expose them to the type of technology that they may very well be designing themselves in future years. Video games merely entertain – educational robots prepare them for the future.

Ozobot 2.0

Ozobot 2.0

The Ozobot 2.0 Bit is a handy little programmable robot that can keep your kids occupied for hours.  Now first of all this device is a little on the small side – measuring in at just over an inch.  But the point of this bot is not its size but its capabilities.  You can program your Ozobot Bit to dance, race, and more.  There is a corresponding app that lets you play in-app games, download activities from the Ozobot website, and create your own challenges and games.

One aspect that we find interesting is the various levels of programmability of this little device.  Younger kids can create simpler activities using basic OzoCodes, and they can command their Ozobot to do numerous actions with names like Nitro Boost, Zig-Zag, and Tornado.

Advanced Programming

As children grow they can advance on to more advanced skills in which they can fully program the Ozobot using a visual editor.  This is the real power of this toy – allowing kids to step beyond basic commands and activities and taking control with skills that they can master long before formal programming instruction in school.  The results of their efforts play out in 3D in the real world, not the virtual world like an app or a computer screen.  The Ozobot moves, races, and possibly crashes right in front of them.

The Ozobot 2.0 Bit is not very expensive, and for the potential it can offer your child we find it very attractive as an educational Robot, despite its small size.   This device is recommended for ages 8 and up.

Amazon’s 2014 Toy Lists

Amazon has recently put up their 2014 Toy List webpage.  It is interesting to see the categories they have created this year.  They include the following:

  • Mom’s Picks
  • Wood and Recycled
  • Active Playtime
  • Retro
  • S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
  • Classic Brands
  • Innovation
  • In the Movies

Being an engineer by trade there I find one category particularly interesting, and that’s Innovation. In this group you will find such toys as robots, remote control, and unique building sets.  These toys take kids is different directions then they are used to – they challenge the status quo.

gyrobot

Gyrobot Kit

One particular toy that strikes me as a stand-out toy is the Gyrobot Gyroscopic Robot Kit. You get to build a number of different gyroscope-based robot designs.  Once built these robots move in different ways, such as balancing on 2 wheels, and moving along a tightrope.

This toy has won multiple awards and will be a real winner for any child with an inventive mind.

(Recommended only for >3 years old, due to small parts).

Amazing Robotic Toy – The Sphero

Tech toys are growing in popularity year after year.  We don’t yet have robots in our houses like in the movie “I Robot”, but our kids can now have toy robots in their bedrooms.  The technology development has come so far along that good quality and highly advanced robot toys are available at affordable prices.

Robotic toys come in all shapes and sizes, and some robot toys you might not even characterize as robots.  Some categories of robotic toys are as follows:

  • Entertainment robotic toys
  • R/C robot toys (remote controlled)
  • Robot gadgets
  • Robot pets (e.g. dogs and cats)

sphero

The Sphero robotic toy is one of the hottest robot toys out there.  Like I mentioned before not all robotic toys actually look like robots, and this toy is in the shape of … a sphere.  Just a ball, but a ball that can do some really cool tricks.

The main function of Sphero is to go where you tell it to.  This toy is controlled by an app on your mobile device, and it travels according to the tilt and touch of your device – all controlled by you.  There are single- and multi-player games available that increase the usefulness and fun-factor of this device.  The toy also includes a camera.

The Sphero is rather small – about the size of a baseball.  That makes it easy to transport. And the smaller size conserves battery power – up to an hour of play on a single charge.

There are about 7 companion apps that interact with the toy.  These include a golf app, Sphero Cam which uses the onboard camera, Draw N Drive, and MacroLab in which you can program Sphero’s movements.

sphero-ball

Sphero is compatible with a variety of mobile platforms, including iOS 4.0 or greater, Android 2.2, Android 2.3.3+, and Android 3.0+.

The price of this cool toy is not out of reach – list price is in the $130 range but typically sells for about $80.
