Best Kids Games for Christmas 2019

Toys are great for kids, but often many toys are individualized, meaning children tend to play with toys by themselves.  That’s all well and good, but such play doesn’t promote interaction with other children, which can build excellent life skills such as cooperation and patience.  And that’s where games come in. Not just “board games”, but all kinds of games that allow your kids to have some competitive fun with other children or even adults.

When children play games they learn all sorts of valuable skills and life-lessons.  Cooperation, rule-following, patience, strategy, and also sportsmanship.  When such attributes can be instilled at a young age the child will be on a great start in life.

Here are some of our selections for top-rated and award-winning games that kids will love for Christmas or their birthday in 2019 and beyond.

Disney Villainous Board Game

Disney Villainous Game

Disney Villainous Game

Kids love their Disney heros and princesses, but they also have an attraction to the villains.  With the Disney Villainous Board Game kids play as their favorite evil-doers like Maleficent, Ursula, and Captain Hook.  Players take on the role of the villain and plan out their schemes in the way of the villain to reach their objective before the other villains.  In the process kids, I mean the villains, will set traps, wield curses, work with their evil allies, be genuinely diabolical.

The game is very well designed for kids, with oversized pieces, immersive storytelling, and a detailed scheming guide for each villain.  This game is recommended for ages 10 and up.

Monster Match Dice and Card Game

Monster Match Dice and Card Game

Monster Match Dice and Card Game

Here is a fun game for the younger crowd.  The Monster Match Dice and Card Game is great for kids ages 6 and up. It is a quick-paced game of catching, of all things, cute little donut-eating monsters.  When players roll the “Monster Dice” they hurry to find a monster that matches the dice rolled.  It’s a real challenge for the kids to find a monster matching either 3 eyes…or 4 arms!  Kids need to be quick and strategic in this game.  It’s pretty easy to learn and easy to play.

Unstable Unicorns Card Game

Unstable Unicorns Game

We like this simple little game.  With the Unstable Unicorns Game you can build a unicorn army because unicorns are your friends. Unstable Unicorns is a strategic card game about destruction and unicorns, two things that kids can really get into. The first person to build an army of 7 unicorns wins the game.

Voice Originals: When in Rome Trivia Game

When In Rome Trivia Game

When In Rome Trivia Game

We found a more advanced game that is geared towards technologically-aware teenagers.  The When In Rome Trivia Game brings in an unlikely emcee: Amazon’s Alexa.  During the play of this game you prompt Alexa to ask the trivia questions that must be answered to progress through the game.  The game is geared towards world travel, and the questions accordingly focus on relevant categories such as slang and language, food and drink and random and strange.

This game does require that you connect to the ‘when in Rome’ skill on your Alexa-enabled device, such as the Amazon Echo. Players split into two teams, and compete each other to make new friends, earn upgrades and collect souvenirs in the cities they visit.  This is such an original game that we can’t leave it off our list.

It may only be January, but we’ve already got some of the top toys lined up for the year to come.  Toy companies can’t wait until later in the year to finalize their toy production plans, so toys are release very early in the year to get exposure and to begin selling.

Let’s start our reviews with the Construction Toy category.  Lego is still a big player, but there are many other construction toys that are very popular with kids these days.  These other construction sets target different types of skills and attributes of the young builders. Let’s sett what we’ve got.

5 Hot Toys for 2017 – Early Look

Summer is just starting but it’s a perfect time to start looking ahead at what might be the hottest toys for Christmas in 2017.  There are a lot of great candidates, toys and gadgets for for all ages.

1. Hatchimals – The Hottest Toy for 2016 is Back!

Hatchimals took the world by storm last year, and within days it they’re release they were sold out and were hard to find all the way through Christmas.  We expect availability to improve this year, but you can never be too sure.

A new type of Hatchimal this year is the Hatchimal Glittering Garden.  The Sparkly Penguala is one of the more popular Hatchimal creatures on the market.  Each Glittering Garden Hatchimal has sparkly fur and twinkly wings.  The process is simple:  Help them Hatch, Raise your Hatchimal, then play Interactive Games.  The quality has improved since 2016, so you shouldn’t let that bother you in 2017.

Another types of Hatchimals is the collectible series called Colleggtibles.  These are smaller creatures that your child can collect and use their imagination with.

2 – Fidget Spinners and Fidget Cubes

Fidget Spinner

Fidget spinners have experienced a roller coaster in 2016.  These stress-relieving toys have become a viral toy in the beginning part of the year, then quickly attracted some negative press because of some reports of dangers to small children.  So let’s put a disclaimer right up front:  Do not buy a fidget spinner for small children.

There are so many fidget spinners on the market, so use this link to view a selection of fidget spinners on Amazon.

Fidget Cube

An alternative to the fidget spinner is the fidget cube.  These are considered more socially acceptable, and give you a few more options to release your stress with.

3. Furreal Friends Flurry

Furreal Friends – Flurry

Here is another repeat hot toy from 2016, but this is still a very popular item in 2017.  The electronics pets from Furreal Friends are widely popular with children as well as nursing homes.  Yes the elderly can actually benefit with an electronic toy they can interact with.  This cute pet named Flurry Pet coos, kicks, and walks to you when you shake her rattle – more than 45 sound combination.  Of course these pets are as soft as can be too.

4. Cozmo the Robot by Anki

Cozmo by Anki is a very highly rated robot toy, and we continue to recommend it year after year.  Cozmo learns more about you the longer you hang out with it.  He’s a real-life robot like you’ve only seen in movies, with a one-of-a-kind personality that evolves the more you interact with it.

New Hatchimals Versions

Unless you were living under a rock in 2016 you should know about the smash toy hit known as Hatchimals, those cute little interactive toys that would hatch and mature as they are played with.  The problem was they sold out almost immediately after release and they were nearly impossible to find all the way through Christmas.

Original Hatchimals – 2016

But now Spin Master, the company behind the craze, is release two new versions of their Hatchimals.  They are not available yet, but will likely hit stores in a few months.

The first is Hatchimals Glitter (priced at $59.99 each), which enhances the original Hatchimals concept with some sparkle. The new creatures’ names are “Sparkly Pengualas” and “Shimmering Draggles”, both of which sport sparkling fur, new sounds, songs and games. Hatchimals Glitter will hit stores in July.

Also new are Hatchimals Colleggtibles, which will hit stores in May.  The are smaller versions of the the original Hatchimals – mini plastic creatures that live inside a mini egg with a large purple heart on it.  These are self-hatching like the original version – kids have to help hatch their Colleggtibles by rubbing their hearts until they changes from purple to pink, which means it’s ready to hatch.  Manually crack open the egg and hidden inside are mystical animal-inspired creatures with glittery wings.

The first line of Colleggtibles will have 70 creatures, including severak limited editions. The Hatchimals Colleggtibles will be sold in packs ($2.99 for a single and $9.99 for a 4-pack).
